You really wanna uppgrade ult to level 2? Isn't the Damage over time effect better than some splash damage?
With HotD/Vanguards and level 2 ult you can go and mince stacked ancient camps. Lots of money there.
If you're doing lots of pushing though you can keep the green dragon ult instead for corrosion.
People rave about his ultimate, yet I still find the only reason I would ever want a
It's probably because your average pub game, including this guide, try to play him as a carry. In comp games when Davion's picked it's not as a carry. They pick him for his constant AOE slow in the lategame. He builds completely health/armour based with Vanguards, Pipe, Heart/Assault.
His job is to stay alive and cause a mess and keep everything slowed for the carry to beat on. He is essentially being used for exactly what you say, his disable, which incidentally is the ult everyone is raving about. It's not his stun they're after (not that it's not effective, because it is a great follow up stun). They're looking for DK's AOE slow. If a team is looking for an awesome power stun generally they'll try and pick up a hero more along the lines of ES or Sven. In most cases Range+AOE are a bigger factor.

You ever rarely have to open with your stun. At level 6, if you want to go in for a kill, you use your ultimate since it gives you range and extra effects. I mainly have to use the stun to either stop someone from hitting me while I'm killing them, or to prevent them from killing me before I kill them.
And while I can see how

Force staff only gives very very minor mana regen. In the long run it just delays your other core items by a fair chunk (it's over 2k in gold), and if you really want mana regen badly a Soul Ring is so much better. With DK's ridiculous HP regen it's a bottomless pit of mana.
In the end, 2.2k gold just to set up a single target stun ain't really worth it. Not when you get a massive slow in the lategame anyway. Until then you're better off just rushing your other items and using it as follow up stun (if you're drafting a decent team you shouldn't have the need to spend 2.2k just to set up a stun, and even if you do need it that badly you may as well have the support player buy it instead, it's not like you need to carry it).
