Children love telling stories about the whimsical adventures of fairies… That’s because it preserves their long-lost legacy. Nowadays, the Fae are well known as mischievous tricksters and spiteful sadists, especially due to the exploits of Mireska. While none would argue otherwise against this fact, they were not always this way. Graceful and loving, playful yet kind. Quite the contrast to the Faeries of the current day, Fairies were nearly their exact opposite in terms of personality. Indeed, Faeries were once Fairies and the Fae Realm was once a part of our world. It used to be a thriving kingdom at the heart of all life. So, what happened?
An old tale tells that one dreadful day, malevolent magic began to seep into the land. It targeted and crept into the Fae Kingdom, and its inhabitants became twisted into the devious beings they are today. Upon being completely overtaken, the whole empire was pulled apart from the world into wherever the darkness had originated from. This however, does not tell the real story. The corruption was not directly due to the invasion; it was due to the effort to stop it. Monarch of the Fae Kingdom at the time, Titania took it upon herself to halt the alien essence that actually threatened to consume all life. But stopping it proved too much to handle and thus, she and her three most faithful subjects decided to instead contain the magic within the domain and then disconnect the whole land to seal its growth.
This last gambit drained the queen of all her magic. Choosing to sacrifice her kind by distorting and isolating them, the rest of the world was saved. Most Fairies became Faeries, cruel reflections of their caring selves. Some unlucky few became wisps like Jex, smaller but no less deadly or malicious as the others. Only Titania herself remains her old Fairy self, but powerless. Meanwhile, the followers who assisted her that day managed to keep not just their personality but their magic as well, except turned into wisps. Though they are transformed and their queen is helpless by herself, they continue to serve her with great devotion. Alone, she and her subjects are martyrs crippled by their decision to abdicate themselves for the greater good. But together, they are still a force to be reckoned with in their quest to find a way to save the rest of the Faeries.
Titania is a ranged Intelligence hero who is a great addition to any team when mastered. Similar to Earth Spirit, she is defined by her innate ability which in her case are Fairies. They are loyal vassals that follow her every order, from Quelling foes to Whisking her wherever she pleases and Encircling faraway places. The multiple variants of each ability make her especially versatile, able to overcome a variety of situations with ease. However, her effectiveness drastically decreases while they are gone so proper management of her passive is important. But when the queen truly needs her subjects, her Royal Decree guarantees their return to finish what was started.
Passively reduce the replenish rate of her Fairies.
When cast, call forth her subjects to fully regain Fairy charges. For every Fairy she was already holding, 30% of the cooldown and cost will be refunded.
Aghanim's Scepter: Reduces the mana cost and cooldown of Royal Decree by half.
Cooldown Reduction: 1, 2, 3 Ability: No Target Mana Cost: 20% of Max Mana Cooldown: 60, 40, 20
Despite losing all her magic, Titania retains her title of monarch and all the merits that come along with it.
Notes
Passively reduces Fairy replenish time to 7, 6, 5 seconds.
Passively reduces total time to regain all Fairies to 21, 18, 15 seconds.
Cannot be activated while at max Fairies.
With Scepter, reduces the mana cost to 10% of max mana and cooldown to 30, 20, 10 seconds.
10: 20 Move Speed or 10 Intelligence 15: 250 Health or 100 Attack Range 20: -1s Fairy Replenish Time or 75 Attack Speed 25: 40% Item Cooldown Reduction or 120 Damage
I’ll just be discussing important points here in FAQ format. Her base spells are easy to understand and their combos with each other are relatively straightforward, so I won’t go into deep detail into them.
“Her 3 Fairies version of spells are too strong!”
Yes, yes they are. They are essentially ultimate versions of the base spells. The key thing to remember here that makes this not as insane as it sounds is that outside of her ultimate, casting this version effectively silences her since all her spells share the same pool of Fairies. So, it’s a one-shot cast that severely weakens her so it has to be worth using.
Besides that, the bonuses they provide don’t really amplify their base effect. Therefore, it’s not always the right call to cast the 3 Fairies version once. In some cases, casting 1 Fairy version 3 times can be just as potent in their own right. If you want to do the most damage, you cast the 1 Fairy version of Quell thrice, and so on. Keep in mind that performing this costs extra mana and that again, silences her.
“Why does her ultimate refund cooldown and cost?”
To incentivize more creative usage of casting it. For example, casting the 2 Fairies version of her spells twice back-to-back. This also encourages her to throw out 1 Fairy versions of her spells and worry less about having to quickly use her ultimate to cast a 3 Fairies version. Otherwise, players would probably just hold onto it to always cast 3 Fairies versions back to back as that’d be the most effective usage of it.
“Why do the 2 Fairies version of spells benefit allies?”
It grants her further versatility in ability usage, fundamentally changing how she would use them in a way unique from the 1 Fairy and 3 Fairies versions. And that makes her more interesting to play. Also, because I want them to.
“She’s so versatile and strong in so many situations. What’s her weakness?”
As mentioned before, her ability to contribute in fights is especially impacted as she runs out of Fairies. What this means is that while she is incredibly versatile, it’s usually only strong at one aspect at a time. Even with her ultimate, she can’t do everything at once.
She’s also pretty fragile for a hero with low Strength and armor. Yes, she has good escape and defensive tools but again, remember that doing this reduces her capability to further impact fights. Some talents and items can help her contribute outside of spells. With the right side of the tree and and Aghanim's Shard, her attacks can hurt. With her level 25 item cooldown reduction talent, she can spam items like Dazzle for more utility.
Well, that’s about it. Thank you for looking through this relatively complex hero and for reading through this lengthy discussion. I don’t say this often, but I’m pretty proud of this piece, so I hope you enjoyed her as well.
This is my submission for the Lore Laureates Competition, hosted by JakeUbowski and will feature THE Slacks as a judge. Definitely check it out soon if this piques your interest.
Also, I apologize for the terrible formatting this time around. The unique nature of her kit makes it even more difficult to use any other format.
I would like to get your permission to implement this. Actually, I already have, the only thing left is your permission.
The hero's mechanics is really unique, but when I played it, somehow she struggles at using her abilities, since the fairies almost equal to shared cooldowns.
