My goal in the coming school year is to raise my mmr from 1.6k to 3k. Any ideas on how realistic that is/any advice?

I did it, its not impossible. Furthermore, i started from 800mm. Just be patient and improve your skills while you play. I reached 3k just a few days ago after months.

It is realistic and possible. I don't deal with mmr so I can't tell you my personal experience with that, but many friends of mine did it And there's also this guide:

This is an incredibly awesome guide, good not only for mmr purposes but to understand the mindsetting you should have ever when you're playing Dota.

My advices would be to try and perfect your plays with a couple of heroes (you can't raise your mmr by random I think), and concentrate on teamplay - that's what ultimately makes you win (not your KDA, although you should of course work on that as well).
