So dota now does LAN, awesome!
But how does it work?
This is gonna probably sound really stupid to most people, but how does LAN work?
I know it's for offline group playing, but how does that work off the Internet?

It doesn't work off the Internet. DOTA 2 now supports Local Play, not Local Area Network games. You still need an Internet connection with the DOTA 2 Network in order to play games. This is the main difference from WC3 Dota.

That being said, Local Play lets you host the game on a computer on your LAN instead of Valve's servers. This brings down ping to effectively 0ms. I'm pretty sure your cosmetics are still visible because you logged in through Steam.
