So i just made a comment saying this but i'd like to invite more discussion.
Vanguard, is 50% effective on ranged heros, yet i still see it time and time again on characters like viper, weaver, Razor etc.
I ask myself why? and time and again, recommended items seems my only answer.
To try to justify myself let's compare two similar priced items, Vanguard standing tall at 2225 gold, and ultimate orb standing slightly shorter, but i aim to prove, much prouder, at 2100.
lets compare the basic
Vanguard is
250 health
6 hp/s
70% to block 20 damage (ranged)
no upgrade potential = dead weight late game
Ultimate orb is
10 to everythang which is the same as
10 damage
190 health
0.3 HP/s
10 attack speed
1.4 armor
130 mana
0.3 MP/s
Upgrades into linkens sphere, manta style and eye of skadi (all viable late game items, unlikely to be sold as dead weight)
So how does that shape up, in the short term, talking purely defensively, and ignoring the higher cost, vanguard is very slightly better.
but in almost every other aspect, i think its clear ultimate orb packs far more punch for far less gold.
So lets get down to it, why do so many guides and players choose vanguard over other items on ranged heroes?
I think the simple answer is they dont realize it's less effective on ranged heroes, i think they think like i used to before i looked it up, that it blocks less damage FROM ranged heroes, this however is not the case, so the real fault here, its to be layed at the feet of poor recommended items, which have not been updated since the vanguard changes, and the shoddy wording of the tooltip, as well as the lack of intellectual curiosity of most players.
Thanks for reading my first thread, my it stir discussion and provoke understanding.
The main reason is because vanguard is very easy to build, and helps your laning phase much faster than an ultimate orb. Shield helps you from 0:00, assuming it's within your first items. RoH can be picked up within a few minutes, and the vitality booster time varies.
Vanguard gives you fast lane staying power. It's picked up for damage reduction and early game regen. There are some heroes that are very difficult to lane against, because they are constantly trading damage with you(veno, viper, kunkka), and if you do not have a way to make them leave lane, they will completely steamroll your lane.
If you'd like I can show you. We will both play viper. Start with whatever items you want. I will personally start with tango, salve, shield and 3 branches. The tango and salve will heal me until I get my RoH. Past that, you won't be able to trade hits with me, period. I will force you out of lane, which slows your farm, and accelerates my own. By the time you get back to lane, I will have my vanguard complete, or close to complete, and you will be nowhere close to your ultimate orb.
