Oh my god !! Agha and Life Drain at lvl 6 are absolutly required for Pugna in any case.
My core items in any case are TB, aether lens, agha. Without Agha, you can not heal your allies as you want.
Next, for talent lvl 10, I always choose +3 mana regen. You can boost your health with a point booster. Mana regen is required. Without mana, pugna is useless !!!!
Finally I agree perhaps with your 2nd build. Your 1st build is bad for me.
In the first build, I put Aghs as a situational item, because Pipe of Insight was also listed as a core item, and Life Drain's healing on allies is hindered by enhanced magic resistance . So, its defensive potential on allies is really limited, and against Nukers, you're better off getting either Lotus Orb or Pipe of Insight
Aghs' offensive potential is decent, but IMO, it's overrated, specially if the enemy team has several ways to cancel Life Drain, and if your team is lacking control . And against nukers, your greatest source of damage is the Nether Ward anyway, so you're better off using Life Drain more as a secondary nuke than a primary one
His first build is an anti nuker build. He's not suppose to be doing much just keeping his allies alive so Aghanim's Scepter isn't always an option considering you don't get enough money to be able to build that consistently the way he recommends you play Pugna with build 1.
Usually, teams built around magical damage have several ways to cancel channeling skills, and against them, your greatest source of damage will come from the Nether Ward
Against such teams, the money you could spend on Aghs is better spent on Pipe of Insight, which softens their magical damage, or on Lotus Orb, which offers the excellent utility of dispelling silences, hexes and other debuffs on yourself and on your teammates, or even a Blink Dagger, so that you can keep up with your team's initiation, and place your nether ward where it'll be the most effective, when it's the most effective.
From the perspective of your teammates, when you're facing several nukers, the utility that a Lotus Orb's echo shell can provide to them is vastly superior to the utility that Life Drain's healing can . The same doesn't happen against right-clickers, where Lotus Orb has little value, and where you can save teammates with Decrepify + Life Drain . In that case, Aghs has definitely a great value, even more so with its 0 second cooldown, that allows you to switch through several targets
Once you're at this stage of the game, you gotta think about scaling up and becoming a 4th/5th core yourself, to aid your team, instead of going further down on the support road
Good guide! I've noticed many players have been playing Pugna a lot more lately and I was always wondering why! I guess he's a strong hero in the right hands and nobody saw that until now.
He's way better now that Life Drain grants true sight, Aether Lens grants mana regen and Rod of Atos grants a lot of utility to him . He's still as situational as ever, but he's more powerful is properly picked
