Ulfsaar the Ursa Warrior is a Agility Carry with high Strength gain. He specializes in stacking damage on single opponents with the help of Overpower and Fury Swipes. He is an effective jungle, albeit not the best, and can solo the powerful Roshan very early in the game (8-11 minutes in). He is one of my favorite Heroes and is a great addition to a team lacking durability or hard hitters.
On to the guide!
Pro's!
- Jungler
- Great Strength gain despite being Agility based
- Strong hitter in the entire game
- Can snow ball quickly
- Extremely effective ganker
- Short cooldowns
- Solo Roshan very early
- Easy to learn and fun to play
Con's
- Melee Hero (if laning)
- Needs practice to Jungle effectively
- Item dependent
- May have Mana issues without a pair of Arcane Boots in the team
- Can be out-carried by some heroes
- Can easily be shut down by stuns/other disables without Black King Bar
Earthshock
This is Ursa's main tool in initiation, dealing damage and slowing enemies to keep them in range of his attacks. Earthshock is also useful when chasing enemies but be careful! Earthshock's cast animation is quite long and you must be quite close to catch the enemy in the AoE. This skill can also be used as a small nuke to damage and slow creep waves that are pushing your towers too much.
Overall, a great slow to catch up to your enemies and grab some kills.
Fury Swipes
This skill is what defines Ursa. With this, he passively stacks damage every time he hits an enemy, allowing for some MASSIVE damage outputs on tanky foes (and Roshan)! It synergizes perfectly with Overpower, allowing you to dismantle enemies in a flash.
Overpower
One of my favorite skills in the game. This allows you to attack at ridiculous speed to inflict damage extremely quickly on your enemies. This is your nuking skill. This also has a ridiculously short cool down and the active lasts 5 seconds longer than the cooldown itself. It is recommended to use this BEFORE initiating to reduce the time between Earthshock and your opponent's death. If you're ganking a tanky hero, you can also activate it, wait until the effect is almost done, initiate and then re-use the skill after attacking for maximum damage output.
Enrage
This Ultimate is what allows you to scale very well late-game. By taking a percentage of your health into PURE damage, you can build tanky items and still hit like a truck. However, this isn't too useful early game since your HP isn't high enough to make enough of a difference in your damage. It might be a better idea to wait before leveling this skill up, opting for Overpower or Fury Swipes.
Core Items
Vladmir's Offering
Vlad's is your best friend early game, allowing you to solo Roshan with ease. Later in the game, the lifesteal lets your regain HP while farming and Vlad's aura also gives some cool bonuses to your teammates.
Blink Dagger
This is your escaping/initiating/ganking tool and possibly the most important item on Ursa in the mid game. It also lets you travel through the map much quicker, in combination with Phase Boots.
Phase Boots
This should be your second core item, after Vlad's. It lets you chase fleeing enemies with Earthshock and travel through the map with speed.
Sange and Yasha
A personal favorite. I love the extra movement speed (equivalent of having Phase boots activated permanently) as well as Greater Maim, which lets you chase enemies easier. The stat boosts are also very useful.
Extension Items : Offensive
If your team is doing well and you want to go all out damage, buy one of these!
Crystalys & Daedalus
These items speak for themselves. Extra damage and crits to nuke foes. A lot of fun when you can 1-2 shot the enemy support.
Skull Basher
A great item on Ursa if you love to keep your enemies in place. The damage and strength gain is good and the bash is useful. It's always cool when you can finally bash Roshan!
Monkey King Bar
This item is somewhat situational. The damage boost, extra attack speed and bash are all excellent! Make sure to buy this if the opposing team has a Phantom Assasin or someone of the sort.
Extension Items : Defensive
If your team is trailing behind, or your Hard Carry is in need of more kills and you wish to transition into a tankier role, buy these!
Black King Bar
One of the most effective items on Ursa, in any circumstance. This lets you enter a teamfight worry-free of enemy casters and big ultimates. However, be careful as BKB does not stop EVERYTHING! Enigma's Black Hole and Faceless Void's Chronosphere go through BKB.
Heart of Tarrasque
This adds a LOT of strength and HP, which work well with Enrage. The added HP regen is also amazing after a teamfight.
Blade Mail
This item is very useful on squishy nukers. Pop Blade Mail before they hit you and watch them die. This works well if you engage the enemy as well, crushing their life in the blink of an eye.
Luxury Items
These items are only for if you have enough gold and the match STILL isn't over.
Satanic
Forget Vlad's 15% lifesteal, 175% active lifesteal for 3.5 seconds is MASSIVE.
Abyssal Blade
If you have a Skull Basher and saved up enough to buy a Sacred Relic, go ahead. Adds loads of damage and the active stun is very useful in shutting down enemies before devastating them.
Eye of Skadi
Though this item isn't used too much, it gives a lot of mana and HP, plus it allows you to slow fleeing enemies or cripple an enemy carry.
Because Ursa isn't the GREATEST jungler, he may require some patience and practice to Jungle effectively. Make sure to buy a Quelling Blade, a few Tangos and a Stout Shield. If you want to rush Vlad's even quicker, you can screw the shield for another set of Tangos, however you'll be more Tango reliant and you'll lose the effect of your Stout Shield after the initial Jungling phase.
Before Jungling, ask your support to give you an Observer Ward and place it yourself in the jungle when the match starts. This will allow you to see any incoming enemies, as well as scout some camps. Target the easy camps first, then move on to medium and back to small. Because Ursa is taking all the hits, he can't handle large camps without needing to heal often.
Jungling for Ursa is ALL about rushing Vladmir's Offering. Personally, I rush Morbid Mask first, then complete the rest. This allows me get some early lifesteal and be less consumable-dependent. Once you have built your Vlad's,you should be about level 5-7 and ready to do Roshan. Head back to base to heal and head down to the pit.
Ursa is Roshan's worst enemy. However, you need to come prepared. If your support hasn't already, ask them to ward the area in front of the Roshan Pit in case any enemies come by to check if you're there. To evade enemy wards, purchase a Smoke of Deceit to sneak into the pit. Because you have lifesteal, you shouldn't need any HP regen items, however you can buy a Healing Salve to be sure. Beware, if you walk out of the pit to use the Salve, you may be spotted by an enemy ward!.
How to solo Roshan as Ursa :
Step 1 : Walk into the pit and greet your new enemy.
Step 2 : Visualize the Aegies of the Immortal in your inventory.
Step 3 : Spam Overpower as soon as it is off cooldown.
Step 4 : Try to not be too annoyed by Roshan's bashes.
Step 5 : ???
Step 6 : Profit!
After securing Roshan for your team, your job is to be the carry. Farm, gank and kill all the enemies you can. Make sure to build items that correspond to your preference and to counter the opposing team. Solo Roshan whenever you can. With Overpower and Enrage, Ursa becomes a strong pusher in the mid-late game, allowing you to take out Towers quickly and gain some precious gold.
In teamfights, you can easily eliminate squishy heroes in the blink of an eye, or focus on their carry. Be careful however, you will often find yourself in the middle of the action and easily focused by the enemy team without Black King Bar.
Ursa has a ton of friends that allow him to grab kills and be a total badass.
Shadow Shaman
Shackles & Hex + Overpower = Dead enemy. Pretty simple combo.
Lifestealer
Lifesteal and Ursa are some of the best pals in Dota. Let Lifestealer infest into you, and initiate on unsuspecting prey. Good times for all.
Tusk
A true northern pairing : a walrus and a bear. This combo is similar to Lifestealer & Ursa. Initiate on foes with Snow Ball and demolish the stunned foes.
Supports!
Ursa loves supports. They heal him, replenish his mana, give him vision of the map with wards and can die in his place if needed.
I hope you enjoyed this guide to playing Ursa. Have fun with this hero and feel free to try new things and builds than this one. Tailor this guide to your playing style and you'll really enjoy this fun Hero.
